Winterton guidebook

Winterton was once a significant market town but it is now mainly residential…

All Saints' Church, Winterton

Situated five miles north east of Scunthorpe off the A1077, Winterton is a small town with around 5,000 residents.

The town’s long history is reflected in the All Saints’ Church which overlooks the market place, itself surrounded by period buildings. The church has a tower and nave dating back to the 11th Century.

The town is well known locally for Winterton Carrs, an area of low lying land which is much loved by ramblers and cyclists, and the Brigg Scenic Drive passes though.

There are two local football teams, Winterton Rangers and Dale Park.  Rangers were founded in 1934 and their excellent facilities include a modern well equipped clubhouse and a new seated stand and dugouts.

Each year Winterton hosts a summer show, a tradition which has been held for over a century.

The town has a conservation area where several centuries of house-building are evident; despite their age differences, the properties display a certain unity as they were all built using local limestone and brick.

The oldest buildings in this part are from the 17 th Century but the majority are elegant Georgian townhouses.

Elsewhere in Winterton there is a large percentage of semi-detached property, and house building and in-filling continued throughout the 20 th Century.

However, although there are a few shops and businesses, Winterton can no longer be described as the self-sufficient town that it was in its heyday, and is now a mainly residential area rather than a source of employment.

Sub Areas

1. Alkborough

Alkborough occupies a position near the northern end of the range of hills overlooking the Humber Estuary at the Trent Falls.

According to statistics from the last census, there are 197 houses, 101 of which are detached. The village is well known for its maze, Julian's Bower.

2. Burton upon Stather

Three miles north of Scunthorpe, this busy village stands on a steep, westward facing cliff overlooking the Trent Valley.

There are only two main roads, High Street and Stather Road, which leads down to the river and the site of a former ferry. High Street has a mix of buildings some of which are believed to date back to the 17th Century.

A former agricultural community, Burton is now a dormitory village with a population of around 3,000.

There’s a local shop and takeaway in High Street and Stather Road has the Sheffield Arms pub which is seen as the village social centre.

Norfolk Way leads to a small modern housing development. Although Burton upon Stather is generally quiet, there can be a traffic problem with lorries travelling to and from the River Trent.

3. Roxby

It’s the Humber views which make this little village of about 500 residents a sought-after place in which to live.

It's about four miles from Scunthorpe and around a mile from Winterton.

4. West Halton

This village community is situated about 10 miles north of Scunthorpe and two miles south of the River Humber. There are 331 people (2001 census) living in 136 households.

More recent years have seen it grow into a dormitory village for people working in and around Scunthorpe.

A one-time school is now the local community hall and, as in the best tradition of English villages, there is a green/playing field as well as a local pub where meals are available.

5. Whitton

Another small north Lincolnshire community with just 170 residents situated about nine miles from Barton upon Humber.

6. Winteringham

This peaceful village had a population of 989 when the 2001 census was taken.

It is a pleasant and secluded place, and is well known for the successful Michelin-starred Winteringham Fields restaurant set in a 16th Century manor house.

Also near the centre of the village are two pubs, The Bay Horse at Gate End and The Ferry Boat Inn in High Burgage, which is also where you'll find the newly re-opened corner shop and post office.

Winteringham also has a Chapel, a village hall, playing fields, an all-weather sports facility, and a primary school.

There is a regular bus service to Scunthorpe in one direction and Barton in the other.
