Over the years the railway has played an important role in the story of Barnetby, or Barnetby le Wold, as it is sometimes known.
Today, the village retains close railway links, having its own station and being situated on the line which carries almost 25 per cent of Britain’s bulk rail freight traffic.
The station also provides regular passenger routes to several nearby towns and cities including Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Sheffield, and the village is on the M180 which means it has good road links, too.
Although the arrival of the railway helped shape the modern village, Barnetby's roots go back over 1,000 years, and part of the Church of St Mary, now sadly redundant, dates from Saxon times.
Barnetby le Wold lies on the Viking Way walking trail which runs from the River Humber to Oakham in Rutland.
Barnetby has two village pubs, both with railway connections, and there is a primary school.
