A pleasant and still rather rural village, Waltham has plenty of local shops, a fine golf club and course, and a six sailed windmill.
It’s a well-established place with the older village centre retaining its traditional feel.
There are plenty of 1970s semis and detached houses, and you’ll also find several large, impressive Thirties style properties. There is some more modern housing as well, particularly on the outskirts.
Waltham, which has a population of about 6000, has a comfortable feel to it, and there is a fairly high number of empty nesters and the retired.
For families whose children are still of school age, the nearby Toll Bar Business Enterprise and Humanities College in New Waltham is popular and successful.
The Waltham Windmill is a great place to visit, and has a restaurant, café, miniature railway, picnic area, and the Museum of Lincolnshire Rural Life.
Situated four miles south west of Grimsby, Waltham is easily reachable by road, and many residents work in the Humber Bank factories which is only a short commute.
Sub Areas
1. Ashby cum Fenby
Small it may be, but Ashby cum Fenby has that country elegance that is much sought-after.
It’s the sort of place favoured by managers and professionals who want rural living at its most pleasant, in well-built houses that are family friendly.
You’ll probably need a car if you live here, as it's a few miles from Waltham's shops and facilities.
2. Barnoldby le Beck
This village lies a couple of miles or so from Waltham and is popular with those seeking quiet country living. It's not cheap, though - the houses for the most part are large and imposing.
There aren't any shops in the village, although there is a pub.
3. Brigsley
Another of those small, inviting villages which dot the Lincolnshire countryside but is still just a few miles from the bustle of Grimsby.
With a population of 370 in the 2001 census, Brigsley is hardly the social centre of northern Lincolnshire but it has rural peace eagerly sought by many who work in stressful jobs.
Its biggest claim to fame is probably the locally made ice cream which has a great reputation.
There are only a few houses which tend to be well established and rather pricey, but Brigsley offers great country living in a quiet retreat.
4. Beelsby
Now this is really small - just 114 people lived there in 2001. There's nothing much here - two local firms have businesses - but the views are stunning, looking across open land towards Grimsby and even Spurn on clear day although it’s 14 miles away.
For those seeking quiet country living, Beelsby is ideal - although you'd need a car.
5. Hatcliffe
If you want solitude and a traditional English village with stunning views, this little place (115 residents) is perfect.
Grimsby is just seven and a half miles away so commuting there is easy, as well as to the main Humber Bank factories.
There is a church which dates back to the 13th Century, and lovers of true village life will adore the stream which passes through Hatcliffe.
