Great Coates guidebook

Despite being on the edge of Grimsby and close to the housing estates of the Willows and Wybers Wood, Great Coates is a most definitely a village…

Great Coates isn't a big place: the last census recorded just over 1,1000 residents living in 500 households, and there's not even a village shop or pub.

But its proximity to Grimsby and the amenities of the Willows estate compensates for this, giving it that desirable combination of access to facilities and village calm.

Great Coates isn't the sort of place that you would normally visit unless you had a specific purpose, but it has a certain gentility reflected in the fact that half of it is a designated conservation area.

Paradoxically, the other half borders an industrial estate – but don’t be put off by this, as the overall area still has plenty of pleasant countryside.

The village offers some attractive properties, most of which are owner-occupied; detached houses are popular and demand is generally good.

A planning application is well underway regarding building a new stadium for Grimsby Town Football Club on the outskirts of Great Coates which would also provide a striking new gateway to the town.

Sub Area: Healing

Healing is a most pleasant village situated on the edge of Grimsby, close to the A180 which connects to the motorway system.

Despite recent housing development – in particular, the 'New Estate' – it's still a place of solitude, and initial fears that an influx of people may have resulted in too dramatic a change to the village have been dispelled.

Healing has primary and secondary schools, both with good reputations, and although shopping facilities are limited, there are a handful of small local stores.

There is no village pub but there is a British Legion Social Club. There are also two local men’s football teams and a junior football club.

Detached homes form a major part of local housing stock – around 57 per cent of homes are of this type. There are also plenty of well maintained semi-detached houses with flats accounting for just 5.5 per cent of the total stock.

Because it's close to the A180 and the motorway system, Grimsby and the Humber Bank factories are an easy commute for residents.

There is also an unmanned train station with services on the Cleethorpes-Barton line, and regular bus services run throughout the day to Grimsby and Immingham.
