Cleethorpes guidebook

Cleethorpes has always been popular with tourists but now it's attracting new residents, too…

Oh, people do love to be beside the seaside, and that’s why Cleethorpes is doing well.

A million people a year come to walk the beaches, eat ice cream, enjoy the seafront attractions and paddle in the water at the mouth of the Humber.

But live here and you pretty soon realise there’s more to it than this. A lot more.

They like to be known as Meggies, these Cleethorpians, and they are rightly proud of a town which for years saw a steady decline but which has pulled itself together.

Cleethorpes has gone all out to meet a new market for the 21st Century, one which is bringing lots of life and big development to the town.

Nowadays, it has trendy bars and nightclubs, and restaurants and cafes alongside some great costal scenery and traditional entertainment.

Then there's the changes to the seafront: the old Winter Gardens are no more – they’re going to build apartments on the site. Other seafront developments have gone the same way.

And so in come the new Meggies – many of them older people seeking retirement homes, but are young professionals looking for smart apartments in seafront locations.

'Smiles more fun' used to be the slogan of Cleethorpes. It still should be.

Property in Cleethorpes

Traditional terraced home are numerous in Cleethorpes, but there’s a wonderful selection of more modern semis and detached houses as well.

Recent significant seafront developments have resulted in attractive apartments overlooking the beach and Humber estuary.

More apartments will be built on the site of the former Winter Gardens.

Living here

Leisure and entertainment:

There's plenty of good, old seaside fun with ice cream vendors, hot dogs, chippies and the like, amusement arcades, sandy beaches, floral promenade gardens, a boating lake and the Discovery Centre with its superb lakeside location.

Braver fun lovers go for Pleasure Island which has the East Coast's wildest rides - among them heart stoppers such as the Boomerang, Hyperblaster and the Alakazam.

Another popular attraction is the award winning Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway which operates along the foreshore and Lakeside.

Cinema fans gather at the Parkway multiplex cinema, and the town also has a bowling alley and a golf course.

There are fun pubs, traditional pubs, flash cafes where the trendy meet, and some great old style pubs, too.

Shopping:

You want variety – you’ve got it. But don’t expect the big department stores – Grimsby has most of those.

Shops in Cleethorpes are based mainly in two areas - St Peter's Avenue and Seaview Street.

Of these, Seaview Street is the oldest retail part of the resort and today has a fascinating selection of shops which sell magic goods, craftwork, clothing, underwear, furniture for dolls' houses and antiques.
