Goole Market Hall
To many it is still known by the name which has dogged it for decades: Sleepy Hollow. But Goole is much livelier than you may imagine.
So it should be, as it’s an important inland port which welcomes visitors from around the world to its docks, located just a short stroll from the town centre.
Goole is one of those towns that you probably hear about, drive past or pass through on a train yet never pause to investigate. It’s well worth a look, though, and many who do just that have actually re-located there.
It is, in fact, a small but thriving place with about 17,600 residents, and new homes development proves that there is a demand to live there.
Goole has some local shops, some lively pubs (well, with loads of foreign seamen in town there would be, wouldn’t there?) and there’s a real community spirit.
As for housing there are some cracking properties around at good prices.
At the moment, Goole is in East Riding of Yorkshire but history has shown that it could, in fact, be 'claimed' by other areas, too.
Prior to the 1974 local government reform, it was an urban district in West Riding of Yorkshire. It was then in the Boothferry district of Humberside until that was abolished in 1996.
Property in Goole
Goole has plenty of terraced homes and semi-detached houses.
Peter Ward, one of the largest independent house builders in the region, has built almost 200 new homes in or around Goole in recent years.
One of his latest projects is the 84-home Captain’s Close development which includes terraced, semi-detached and detached homes ranging from two to four bedrooms.
Sub Areas of Goole
Airmyn: Lying west of the M62 and A614, Airmyn is a quieter village than it used to be when heavy traffic passed through on the way to Hull prior to the arrival of the motorway.
Apart from a fairly large memorial hall and Woodland Park, there isn't much in the way of amenities, but Goole is only two miles away.
Rawcliffe: Standing on the bank of the River Aire, this village is four miles from Goole. It is close to the M62 and A614, and its population is 2,087.
Rawcliffe Bridge: A hamlet which forms part of Rawcliffe parish; it is situated three miles from Goole, south of the M62.
