Evesham
An ancient town with a modern outlook and origins traceable back to the 8th century, Evesham's historic credentials are indisputable. It was the setting for the battle of Evesham in 1265, leading to the fatal defeat of the Earl of Leicester, Simon de Montfort, by Henry III. Evesham Abbey was one of the richest in England and parts of it still survive today, along with a fine array of historic buildings in the town centre. These include the 15th century Round House, now a bank, the twin churches of All Saints and St Lawrence, the Bell Tower, and perhaps the most notable, the 14th century Almonry. The lands once belonging to the Abbey are now the lovely Abbey Park, whose tree shaded banks and flowerbeds from a colourful vista on the riverside.
Evesham is one of those English Market towns that has managed to preserve its unique historic flavour whilst moving with the times. So, far from being a museum piece, the town centre is a lively place with many shops, two large supermarkets and a remarkably good range of cafes, restaurants and welcoming pubs. The newly refurbished Riverside Shopping Centre is adjacent to another shopping area in pedestrianised Bridge Street, which in turn leads to the High Street. Evesham has a cinema, the Regal, a theatre and its own Arts Centre, where you can see everything from jazz to pantomime, stand-up comedy to ballet.
All can be reached in a short walk from Avon Vale, just across the river.

LIFESTYLE

Messing about on the river
Evesham is located in a 'loop' of the Avon, and the river is a focus for a great deal of leisure activity. For example, Evesham is renowned for its coarse fishing. Boating is also popular, and you'll find many moorings and marinas in the town. There are river-based annual events such as the Evesham Regatta, the Raft Races and Evesham show. All year round, you can enjoy walks along the peaceful riverside footpaths or water meadows next to the Abbey.
Evesham Rowing Club, founded in 1863, is still very active, and has expanded to include many additional sports including tennis, squash and snooker. You can also keep your fitness up to scratch at the Leisure Centre, which provides a swimming pool, squash and badminton courts, along with a fully equipped gym.

Around the Vale of Evesham
This fertile agricultural area is often called 'the fruit basket of England'. It is particularly spectacular in spring when the plum and apple trees burst into blossom, a time for perfect days out in the countryside, stopping off at a village pub or two along the way. Just south of the Vale of Evesham, the Cotswolds begin, surely one of the best-loved and most picturesque regions in the country, with its mellow stone villages and historic sites.
Within a short drive are two more historic towns, each with its own claim to fame. Stratford upon Avon of course is world-famous for its Shakespearian connections, while Worcester has a magnificent cathedral, a setting on the River Severn, and its excellent shopping centre.
A little close to Evesham is Pershore, another Avon market town with elegant Georgian architecture and an imposing abbey. It too offers a tempting range of pubs and restaurants, and like Evesham has its own Arts Centre. It's certainly close enough for an evening out or an afternoon's shopping.
