Chippenham lies on the River Avon and the route of the Great Western Railway and is famed for its massive railway arches and abundance of historic buildings, built in the time of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The towns name is derived from a Saxon man called Cyppa and the word Hamme; meaning a settlement enclosed by river, hence Cyppas Hamme. In 2006 Sheldon school achieved the best ever A Level results for a comprehensive school in Wiltshire and came within the top 25 of the league table. In fact it has been highlighted as one of the best schools in England no less than 3 times by top government inspectors and recognised as a specialist in science. There is a wide selection of primary schools within close proximity and an independent school, taking children from 2 to 16, with 100% of pupils scoring A-C grades in Maths and 94% achieving AC grades in English in 2005*.
