Winkleigh guidebook

Winkleigh is one of Devon’s undiscovered treasures…

It is a rural retreat small enough to retain its unique traditions, but large enough to boast a vibrant village community.

Strategically positioned between Barnstaple and Exeter, with good transport links, Winkleigh offers easy access to Dartmoor, Exmoor and many areas of both local and national interest.

The outstanding North Devon coastline is within easy reach, and there are a range of fascinating walks on the village's doorstep.

The historic farming village has a wealth of clubs, and organisations from the famous Winkleigh Singers to the Winkleigh Society which works to enrich the lives of people in the community.

There is also an all-purpose sports centre, and the village is home to the West of England Transport Collection.

The thriving primary school has its own young gospel choir, and the community unites without fail every year at the start of the summer for the 750 year old Winkleigh Fair.

Winkleigh has an extensive and fascinating history and is the only village in Devon to boast the remains of 12th century castles — two large historic mounds. Its airfield, which was pivotal during World War Two, is equally well known today.
