Torrington guidebook

The unique Cavalier town, Great Torrington, boasts a vibrant community proud of its heritage…

The friendly, welcoming town of Torrington is an ancient settlement, set on an inland cliff top with steep drops down to the River Torridge below.

It is in the heart of the Tarka Country and its landscape has remained virtually unchanged since Henry Williamson wrote his classic novel, Tarka the Otter.

The town had a significant role in the English Civil War, especially the battle of Torrington in 1646, which still remains a central focus of the town today with re-enactments, festivals and celebrations.

The thriving town centre boasts a selection of unique cafes and shops, as well as a theatre, museum and a host of clubs and organisations. It is home to some of the area’s most popular attractions, including RHS Rosemoor.

Torrington comes to a standstill at the start of May every year for its historic May Fair — one of the many community events on the busy Torrington calendar.

The community is encircled on three sides by common land covering hundreds of acres, which has been championed by television stars filming in the picturesque surrounding area.
