South Molton is North Devon's "Gateway to Exmoor". It provides all the facilities you would expect in a town, but just a short distance away you can find yourself surrounded by the remote and dramatic moorland landscape.
South Molton originated in Saxon times and by the time of The Domesday Book in 1086 it was an important settlement.
As well as the market, activity focuses around the town square, which is host to a wide range of small local shops including cafes and food and gift shops, as well as old traditional pubs.
History and tradition is important to the community and the town, which in the past was the centre for a thriving wool trade. It is proud of its Old English Fair, a tradition that dates back to when the town was granted two Royal Charters by Elizabeth I and Charles I.
South Molton has both primary and secondary schools and provides easy access to many activities including sports clubs, a skate park and a swimming pool.
It has a wealth of Medieval, Georgian and Elizabethan buildings as well as new home developments.
