While Lynmouth nestles at the base of steep cliffs, the twin-town of Lynton sits high above on the clifftop. Surrounded by steep wooded cliffs and valleys, the beautiful towns have long been known by their nickname of Little Switzerland.
The area's scenic beauty has inspired artists and poets, not least of which was Percy Bysshe Shelley, who resided here for a while.
The two villages are connected by a unique cliff railway for passengers, which is powered only by water. For the fitter visitors, a steep, but beautiful woodland walk winds its way between the two, which are also accessible by road.
Tea shops, restaurants and quaint pubs jostle for space with souvenir shops full of seashells and hand made crafts, along the one main street.
A Mecca for walkers, Lynmouth provides a scenic base for those who come to explore Exmoor and the picturesque Watersmeet Valley with the National Trust's Watersmeet House and tearooms, as well as the Valley of Rocks, home to the famed wild goat population.
