Thurlestone is a pretty and lively village with a strong community spirit, a short distance from the market town of Kingsbridge and the sailing centre of Salcombe. It takes its name from the distinctive pierced, or thirled stone which sits just off the shore and is mentioned as a boundary point in a Saxon charter of 845.
Set above the magnificent sweep of Bigbury Bay, Thurlestone is famous for its distinctive arched rock that breaks through the sea just offshore, which was the subject of a painting by Turner.
The village is surrounded by peaceful hills and fields in an Area of Outstanding Natural beauty. Stone and thatch cottages cluster around the village centre, with its imposing old church, a useful post office stores, and 16th century Village Inn. The inn, which has been in the Grose family for 100 years, has live entertainment and music on Friday nights.
The Grose family also own the splendid Thurlestone Hotel where there is a beauty and hair spa with an ozone pool and treatment rooms. There is also a Leisure Club featuring an outdoor swimming pool and sun terraces, 9 hole golf links course, badminton, squash and tennis courts.

Thurlestone has two beaches and both feature in the Marine Conservation Societys Good Beach Guide. The larger of the two, which is owned by the National Trust, is ideal for families with beach facilities and café, surf school, windsurfing, snorkelling, rock-pooling and a lifeguard service during the summer.
The village and its beaches bustle with holidaymakers in the school holidays and many of them have been coming here for generations. Out of season there is a strong community and the village hall provides a useful venue and a focus point for a wide range of activities from Tai Chi to Rotary Club events.
All Saints Primary School flourishes, and has approximately 130 children. The most recent Ofsted inspection reported standards well above average and that the quality of teaching and learning was consistently good.
Thurlestone is less than five miles from Kingsbridge, a substantial old market town with primary and secondary schools, shops, restaurants, banks, a cinema and cottage hospital.
