Ilfracombe guidebook

A traditional Victorian seaside town, Ilfracombe is the gateway to an exciting blend of stunning coastal scenery, seaside fun, rural tranquility and centuries of heritage and style...

It holds a coast of contrasts, with the quaint harbour juxtaposed against the architectural focus of the twin-towered Landmark Theatre, outside of which street entertainers and Morris dancers entertain the summer visitors.

The bustling harbour is a hive of activity all year round. Fishing trawlers moor up alongside pleasure boats and vessels from the harbour-side yacht club, while paddle steamers take visitors across to Lundy Island or to explore along the Exmoor coast.

Galleries, ice-cream parlours, Damien Hirst’s restaurant at Number 11, The Quay and the traditional pier all add to the attractions to this part of the town.

And there are exciting plans for a passenger ferry between Ilfracombe and Swansea in the pipeline, which are expected to bring a welcome boost to the local economy.

The town itself and shopping centre sit on the hillside embracing the coast, an eclectic mix of whitewashed houses, grand Victorian villas and terraces which climb over the Wilder Valley.

Ilfracombe proudly celebrates its Victorian heritage each year in June, with a week of parades, tea dances, music at the bandstand, pearly kings and queens and theatre shows.
