Chulmleigh guidebook

With thatched cottages, welcoming pubs and an ancient parish church, Chulmleigh is a traditional rural Devon town with a thriving community spirit...

The town's history dates back to the year 815AD when Ceolmund, a Saxon chief came across a hilltop area close to the River Taw. The stunning views, along with plenty of deer and wild boar in the forests of nearby Eggesford were so appealing he took over the site and named it Ceolmund’s Leigh — Chulmleigh.

Despite its remote location, deep in the heart of the Devon countryside, Chulmleigh is well served with both primary and secondary schools, a library, shops and restaurants.

There is some very old architecture in the town in the form of cob and thatch and Devon Stone buildings.  In addition, it is surrounded by ancient semi-natural woodlands, old Saxon hedges and has been named an Area of Rural Tranquility and an Area of Great Landscape Value.

The town is proud of its legends and traditions evidenced by the annual celebration of Chulmleigh Fair Week.

Chulmleigh is within easy reach of both Dartmoor and Exmoor and there are plenty of opportunities for leisure activities in the area, including golf, horse riding fishing, mountain biking and walking.
