Padstow guidebook

Padstow is an ancient harbour town situated in the heart of North Cornwall...

Padstow harbour nowadays is used by both leisure craft and fishing vessels, with crabs and lobster being a main catch.

Not surprisingly, then, the town boasts excellent restaurants – including the Rick Stein empire - which specialise in locally caught fish and seafood.

The celebrity chef has been running his world renowned Seafood Restaurant in Padstow since the 1970s, and he has subsequently opened another three restaurants - St Petroc's Bistro, Rick Stein's Cafe, and Stein's Fish and Chips - as well as a deli, a patisserie and a gift shop.

Elsewhere, this charming historic town has a number of old crooked streets sloping down to the harbour with some beautiful medieval buildings, and it is home to a good selection of shops, restaurants, bars, art galleries, and the National Lobster Hatchery.

Padstow's stunning cliff and estuary walks can be enjoyed all year round, and there is a great range of water sports on offer including sailing, surfing, water-skiing and windsurfing.

Daily fishing trips are available from the harbour with options for a speedy two hour excursion through to a whole day on the water, and some of Cornwall's best beaches are only a few minutes away by car.

Every year Padstow celebrates May Day by "unleashing" the pagan 'Obby 'Oss, and the whole town is filled with a festival spirit from early morning until late at night.
