Newlands Place, Witney, Oxfordshire
The village of Eynsham dates as far back as the Iron Age.
Today, Eynsham retains an historical heritage with many beautiful 16th and 17th Century buildings located in the heart of the village centre.
These buildings were constructed from materials taken from the once famous Abbey of Eynsham, demolished on the orders of King Henry VIII.
Today, Eynsham blends the charm and character of the old with more modern architecture.
A Leisurely Stroll…
Eynsham enjoys a picturesque setting with a wonderful village quality, yet there is still plenty to keep residents entertained.
The Jacobean style Eynsham Hall is nestled in 30 acres of magnificent gardens and parkland and is worth a visit. Slightly further out, but still within easy reach, is the extraordinary Dutch-style Ashdown House, famous for its association with the sister of Charles I, Elizabeth of Bohemia.
The easily accessible roof provides breathtaking views of the gardens and the Berkshire Downs. The neighbouring Ashdown Woods are also perfect for long scenic walks. While Weathercock Hill and Alfreds Castle, an Iron Age defended settlement, is an ideal starting place for spectacular country walks.
A lively day out…
The Eynsham Carnival is held every year on the first Saturday in July and attracts visitors from far and wide. Enjoy diverse acts, from mountain bike aerial displays to chainsaw carvers who create wooden sculptures throughout the day. The parade includes decorated floats, a marching band and a line of classic vehicles. The famous carnival shirt race through the streets of Eynsham is an absolute must for spectators.
Eynsham also has a cricket club, where lovers of the sport can watch teams from Oxfordshire competing for the county championship.
History on your doorstep…
The city of Oxford is just under 9 miles from Eynsham and provides an abundance of shops, restaurants and pubs, as well as picturesque architecture, walks and river trips. Furthermore, the nearby town of Witney is going through a £40 million redevelopment that will include retail outlets and a cinema.
Location, location, location…
