There are new town centre retail units which are busy & there is a Costa coffee shop opening in a few weeks.  The amount of smartly dressed people travelling from the rail stn in the morning shows that the area is attracting professional people.

With quick & easy access to central London, Richmond, Twickenham and Heathrow, its still one of the best locations around south west London to buy & live in. Steven.

Word On The Street: Feltham

...This nice village is now one of the best around the Heathrow area not only in terms of facilities and amenities but also in term of transport links and location: it is excellent for frequent Heathrow travellers, Central London is only 25 mins by train (frequent and efficient service into Waterloo with a Travel card, zone 6), the fascinating Richmond is only 5 mins away, not to mention Twickenham, Hampton or Teddington with their fine restaurants - just less than 5 mins away.

Shopping facilities in Feltham are now outstanding with a consistent number of 24HR large supermarkets (Asda, Tesco, etc) and new attractive retailers like Next, Dorothy Perkins and many more including Argos, Nandos, etc.

House prices are still very attractive considering the recent developments and the ideal location (in between M4 and M3, 5 mins from M25).

Bus links are also excellent, including some 24hr service.

Schools are also considered very good.

There is also a large cinema centre with bowling, bingo, and more bars and restaurants.

Hounslow seems to be still more expensive only because of the Tube. The train service into Waterloo from Feltham is actually better than the tube and it costs the same as it is still within zone 6 and you can use a Travel Card from Feltham. Carriages are all brand new and SW trains are very comfortable (all with toilets) and you can be in London from Feltham in half the time you would spend from Hounslow

So...get a bargain if you can because prices should still go up here.

…We are on top of M3, M25 and M4 so easy links to the rest of the UK.

For leisure, Kempton ParK is a mile away and Twickenham Stadium is 3 miles away, 15 mins in a cab, with all its events, 5 nations, concerts etc.

…However, the new town centre, property affordability and excellent transport links lured me to buy there. I am happy I did! The area is improving rapidly and there are so many amenities on my doorstep. The regular French market is also a sign the area is on the up!

Word On The Street: Feltham

... I went to primary school in Feltham but grew up in nearby Teddington. The area is definitely shaking off the reputation it had 15 or so years ago now the town centre is being regenerated and the transport links are so good.

I've got lovely neighbours, the residential roads are quiet and Feltham is in a great location for getting into town or escaping to the countryside  - it's just a matter of time before the bar and restaurant companies realise there's potential in Feltham too!
Anna

Word On The Street: Feltham

…With fast and frequent trains to Richmond, Clapham Junction, and Waterloo. Also a short bus ride to Heathrow, good for supermarkets and other shops such as Next, Holland & Barratt and Sports World.

Could do with more restaurants and upmarket bars (Nando's opened recently which is an improvement: I found it clean, comfortable, and the staff are friendly) but Richmond is only short train or bus ride away.

I live in the new town centre flats, as I was unable to afford nearby Twickenham, and find a lot of other hard working types who wouldn't have had Felltham as their first choice but are happy, here to stay, make the most of it and see the area improve even more.

A new restaurant below the final block of flats currently being built is due to open in 2008.

Word On The Street: Feltham

... The new Town Shopping Centre is making Feltham a bit busier that what it used to be but it is still remarkably quiet if compared to surrounding areas. Lots of shopping facilities and many major multinational businesses are now based in the industrial part of Feltham!

Huge improvements on all aspects if compared to 10-15 years ago. Definitely has the best facilities and amenities if you need to be close to Heathrow and you would rather avoid the Hounslow area.

House Prices have been going up very quickly since the new Shopping Centre has been terminated. Lots of green spaces too.
James

Word On The Street: Feltham

...It's a lovely place to live, with great transport links, great schools, fantastic shopping facilities and near to Heathrow. Its definitely  on the up!

Word On The Street: Old Feltham

...The village is very nice and extremely well located for Heathrow Airport. Getting to Richmond is only a few minutes by car, bus or train without incurring the same housing costs. In my opinion the incredible aspect of Feltham is not only the vicinity to the main UK airport (without being on the main flight path) but the excellent train service into the heart of London which takes only 25-30 minutes. You cannot get this transfer time from anywhere else if you need to be so close to Heathrow.

The new shopping centre is still being built and it looks better by the day. I just hope it won't get too crowded as Feltham is a nice village especially because it is still relatively quiet if compared to Kingston, Richmond or Hounslow.

So please keep Feltham as a secret.
H. Brown

Word On The Street: Feltham

... but have never really "left" the town- or rather the village, as an old teacher of one once described it, perhaps correctly.

Although it has a population of around 60 thousand, somehow there's something about the place which still gives it the sense of a village. Community spirit is good and there are growing churches of several different traditions for the faith-minded. The schools in the area are much-improved and famous names brought up here include both Brian May and Freddie Mercury, plus celebrity chef Lesley Waters.

The new shopping centre is superb. For many years, you'd have to go to Hounslow, Staines or Kingston for clothes and a choice of shoes; now, once again there are at least five shoe shops plus a Next, Matalan, huge Asda, Argos - and still some vacant shop unites so room yet for more prestige retailers.

Contrary to what some people have said, there are parts of the town which definitely ARE on the Heathrow flight path, and you can't pretend that summer days can be a little noisy. However, runway alternation currently ensures at least part of the day is given over to peace and quiet- and some of the streets in North Feltham, bordering the Crane Valley nature trail are amazingly quiet and peaceful. I've come home - and I'm not sorry I have!

Word On The Street: Feltham

... Prices are moving up quickly in here and the new Town Centre seems to be excellent. Richmond is just a few minutes away, either by train (5mins) or car (5 mins). Going to Central London by train is very fast too, around 25 mins only!

We are very happy and this village is very nice. The best thing is that Feltham is definitely being chosen as the "official" gateway to Heathrow Airport both by businesses and the Government which means a lot of resources are being invested in here at the moment. Heathrow is just 5-10 mins away by car.

Word On The Street: Feltham

I work in the city. I lived in Richmond renting for years. I bought a house in Feltham as it was one of the few places in SW London I could afford at the time. It has improved so much recently that I'm really proud of my decision. I'm going to be honest - it wasn't nice when I moved here, but the change has been rapid and incredible.

I can now afford to buy a house in Twickenham, but I'm not moving now. If you want space, a larger property in a place not too densely populated and easy for London this place is perfect. I'm glad I bought here before the hoards realise how good it is and arrive!

Word On The Street: Feltham

...but I have been there recently and it looks very nice indeed. Lots of quality shops - Well done!!!

Word On The Street: Feltham

... Feltham changed for the worse when they built Highfields but that's all about to change for the better now hopefully.

I'm hoping the new shops will make all the difference as it has not been much of a shopping area for years. We have great transport links, all it needs is a couple of restaurants to go with it and all will be great!

What people need to remember is the Town itself cannot be bad, it's the people that move into it!

Word On The Street: Feltham

... The planners back in the '60s have a lot to answer for! They ripped the heart out of a lovely town.

Thankfully things are looking up. Where else would you have such a great location for access to Heathrow, London etc?

Take a bike ride around and through the town. The Town Pond, The Airparks, The Glebelands and all the other open spaces!

Did you know that the River Longford feeds the fountains at Hampton Court and the Lake in Bushy Park?

At last with the new Shopping Centre people will come to Feltham to shop. No longer will Feltham be a place to drive through to get somewhere else.

I LOVE MY TOWN!

Word On The Street: Feltham

... It was the high rises in Old Feltham which were renowned for being awful. Lower Feltham was always nicer - I should know, I was born and lived here for several years. Hopefully now the whole of Feltham should be a lot better. We deserve it!

Word On The Street: Feltham

... Central London is only 25 mins away by a frequent efficient service train into Waterloo.

Feltham is situated just on the outskirts of Heathrow Airport (<3 miles to T1, 2, 3, 4 and 5), but without the aircraft noise you would get instead in Hounslow or Richmond.

Feltham has extended and expanded in recent years and some areas are still under-priced. Services, transport and shops are excellent.

Apparently a massive new 24 hour ASDA is now being built too, bringing the number of 24 Hour supermarkets in Feltham to an impressive 3 - 2 Tescos and 1 Asda. Not to mention a Sainsburys, an Aldi and a very handy Lidl (which are not 24hr I'm afraid!)

Word On The Street: Feltham

... Houses are affordable but the new town centre will soon change that. Now's the time to buy!

Word On The Street: Feltham

... Clean and tidy and safer than anywhere else I have lived before in London. Excellent transport links and nice parks.

Ideal for families, especially Old Feltham. It's the oldest part of Feltham and is the one with the most expensive houses (e.g. by the Magistrate Court, Police Station, Kings Road etc.)

The new Town Centre looks smart and it replaces what it used to be the ugliest visible aspect of Feltham: a very old awful mix of ugly buildings. Those have now gone for ever.

Let's hope Feltham will not get as busy as Twickenham or Richmond and it will manage to keep its countryside residential quiet status.

Word On The Street: Feltham

... Besides all the facilities you need for day to day living - such as the Tesco Extra and Asda (summer 2006) - there is also fast and simple access to three of the country's major theme parks: Legoland, Chessington World of Adventures and Thorpe Park - for a perfect day out! If you'd rather watch the rides than have a go, racecourses at Epsom, Kempton Park and Sandown are also conveniently close.

Retail therapy is catered for with Kingston upon Thames, Twickenham and Staines all just a short drive away; where you can shop 'til you drop ... into a fine selection of bars, cafes, restaurants, galleries, museums, cinemas and theatres.

I have been here five years and have seen great development in the last couple of years. I just hope the council knows when to stop and save us from overpopulation/congestion - which was why I moved this side of London in the first instance, which worries me slightly.

Word On The Street: Feltham

... I agree Feltham still has some undesirable people, but this can be said for many towns. I find Lower Feltham a quiet part, out of the way of the hustle and bustle of Feltham town centre. I have been in my home for over 7 years and will one day reap the benefit of the property prices should I decide to move!

Word On The Street: Feltham

Feltham is now showing strong signs of serious improvement.
It has needed it: This area, most famous for its young offenders institute, has had (and thoroughly deserved) a bad name for years, but things are changing fast.

I moved here 18 months ago after looking at the proposed town redevelopment plans, and I'm not regretting it. The price of my house has beaten average rises (yes - you can still get a house for the price of a flat here, but not for long). The town centre is being regenerated to such an extent that it's virtually been leveled and started again.

Transport links are excellent: Ultra-convenient for Heathrow (it's not even on the flightpath), M25, M3, M4. Close to Hampton, Kingston, Twickenham, Richmond, Sunbury, Walton, Staines etc. Clapham junction in 15 minutes and Waterloo in 35 on the train.

Old Feltham (nr railway station)is the place to buy, boasting numerous well built period properties. It's close to Hanworth Park, which is a fine green space. Lower Feltham will remain scummy for years to come. Prices are still very undervalued for SW London, but the gentrification is happening. People who live here are putting money and effort into their properties (lots of skips in Old Feltham).

I'm seeing more and more young professionals like myself (thank god!) pouring in and these people will drive the demand for decent shops, pubs coffee shops and leave the KFC litter dropping chavs behind. This town has been a non-entity with a bad name for many years, but people with an eye for 1) growth and ii) a bargain will change this.

Word On The Street: Feltham

Have lived there all my life and seen Feltham beforehand, things have improved massively over the last five years.

There is an overall improvement of life, crime is very low as there are always police patrolling. The development of the Cinema / Bowling alley and the new town centre has made it a more desirable place to live.

And even with Heathrow only a stone's throw away, there is no noise pollution from the planes as they don't fly overhead.

Feltham's new railway station has also been a great improvement, and Hatton Cross tube station is located on Feltham's outskirts. Recently all the main roads in Feltham have been resurfaced as well, there are easy links to the M3, M4 and M25.

I agree that there are no real decent pubs/restaurants in Feltham yet. But Staines is just a few miles down the A30, and there are quite a few there. And there might be a few opening when the new town centre is finished.

I was looking to sell my house last year and move, but have decided against as the area will be a very desirable place to live in the near future.

Hopefully the bad reputation that has long been associated because of the Feltham of old will be lost as it's now a far better place to live.

Word On The Street: Feltham

More and more professional people are moving to this town for obvious reasons as the area has enormously changed in recent years.

Good shops, nice restaurants, nice parks, cinemas, swimming pools, hotels,etc... just a few minutes from the airport and still reasonably priced.

Excellent transport links, including the recently improved Waterloo train, which stops also in Twickenham, Richmond and Clapham: straight into the centre of London from Feltham in just 25 minutes.

New town centre being built too, apparently more hotels are planned and also a massive Asda, Argos and more.

Word On The Street: Feltham

We bought a house here almost 7 years ago and have seen great changes - luxury apartments, waste ground transformed into good looking housing estates, a great leisure park in the heart of the town, and good transport links.

Word on the Street: Feltham

In the last five years the people who get the train in the morning have changed enormously. More suits and more middle classes! The cars in my street are much nicer and the skips started arriving last year. The area is definitely on the up.

The planes come near but not near enough to hear which after years of planes coming right overhead all day and every day is fantastic.

We have fabulous access, the train service is great, I can park my car outside my house every night and Bedfont Lakes is nice.

The downside is there is not a restaurant or nice pub so going out means Richmond or Twickenham, but that's no real hardship.

If they get the town centre development right and the cafes/restaurants/bars arrive I will be staying here even though I can now afford to move back to Mortlake.

Word on the Street: Feltham

...and it is as easy for me to get to the City from Feltham. The aircraft noise is less frequent, actually very rare: in fact Feltham is not directly on any flight path - Hounslow, Richmond and Twickenham are instead.

You can have some flights flying over Feltham after take off from runway 9R but this is a very rare occurence at Heathrow as the usual configuration is the one with planes on final approach over Richmond, Twickenham, Hounslow: in this case Feltham is totally noiseless.

The other air traffc configuration is very rare and Feltham is not on any landing flight path anyway (the lowest type of path).

It's very conveniently located for the M25, M4, M3, trains to the City, Windsor, Reading and night buses. It's also just a 5 minute drive to nearby Richmond, Twickenham, Hampton and Kingston.

Crime is sensibly lower than surrounding areas due to a strong police presence since Feltham became the gateway to Heathrow airport, especially after the development of the new train station.

Feltham is still undervalued and I would expect further developments in the near future due to its ideal location and vicinity to Heathrow.

Word on the Street: Feltham

I work in the City and it takes the same amount of time to get to/from work than it did from Zone 3 (and the trains always seem to be on time). In addition the aircraft noise is surprisingly less. It is really convenient for almost everywhere with the road and public transport network.

The planned redevelopment of the town over the next 4 years is sure to improve things as well. It could do with some decent restaurants which are apparently on the way. I think it will be one of the few places where you can buy and still expect the value of the property to rise.

Word on the Street: Feltham

Despite some of the negativity you hear, Feltham is in a fantastic position to grow and become a central location for professional people. You cannot fault its links with the M25, M4, M3, train links into Central London & Heathrow airport "the gateway to the the rest of the world".

Richmond, Twickenham & Kingston are nearby providing excellent evening entertainment as well as shopping. Overall, it will overcome its negativity and will blossom especially with the new piazza shopping facilities going ahead shortly.

Word on the Street: Feltham

I have lived in Feltham for 16 years and the difference between past and present is immense. When we get our new shopping centre, leisure centre and library it's going to get even better. Property prices can only go up. Watch this space!

Word on the Street: Feltham

I have lived here for more than 20 years now and I have never had a problem with the people and/or the area. It is a very nice place to live in but ask your estate agent for more info about specific areas as Lower Feltham is more similar to Bedfont/Ashford, while Old Feltham is similar to Hampton/Teddington or Twickenham.

The quality of housing and the general standard of services can vary sensibly within the same town, as the Feltham area has now grown. I would suggest Old Feltham, but prices are higher. I live in Lower Feltham and it is still a great place anyway.

Word on the Street: Feltham

London Waterloo is only 20 minutes away by an efficient and frequent train service, definitely quicker and better than the tube from Hounslow or Hatton Cross. Richmond and Twickenham are just 5 minutes away by car or train (e.g. Richmond by train from Feltham station is less than 4 minutes). Two Feltham Tescos are open 24 hours a day and many other supermarkets are within the Feltham area, including several specialist shops.

Nice place to live and still reasonably priced. The new town centre plan and Terminal 5 should further boost business and investments in this area. Good luck Feltham!

Word on the Street: Feltham

Feltham is well located, fast trains into Clapham Junction and Waterloo (about 40 minutes), good for the M3, M4, Heathrow. Feltham needs a new decent shopping centre (which they say is coming), and a decent pub. It's not as bad as its reputation as the new developments off the high street are nice. People can't afford Twickenham, Richmond, Windsor so I could imagine more people will move out here.

Word on the Street: Feltham

You get good quality housing for an affordable price and Feltham is definately upcoming.

Public transport is brilliant and there are lots of foodshops and the Leisure Centre is great.

As soon as more professional people working at Heathrow move to Feltham, which will happen when Terminal 5 is being built, it's very likely that there will be more pubs, restaurants and a greater diversity of shops available.

That will make Feltham only more popular.

Despite some negative things I've heard about Feltham, I've had a really nice and quiet time so far.

Buying a house here has been a great investment.

Word on the Street: Feltham

...even here though prices have shot up since last September.

It is an OK place to live - has a far worse reputation that neighbouring Hounslow but actually is a much more pleasant place to live at half the price - less crime, and more professional people are moving in all the time - all it needs is a decent pub!

Word on the Street: Feltham

It's conviented located for London, Heathrow, but also Windsor, Bracknell, Reading, Kingston, etc

Although very near the airport, I find things noisier in Windsor...

Very cheap compared to places nearby (but not compared to national house prices) hence reason why I moved here in the first place.

Word on the Street: Feltham

What I have noticed is there has been no mention of the Feltham YOI&RC (young offenders institute and remand centre), better known as the local prison. The prison and the prison estate is not on the map but runs along the lower half of the train track just on the border of Ashford. Feltham High Street is also on the flight path for outgoing flights from Heathrow Airport.

Word on the Street: Feltham

...and is never far from the motorways. The planes take off right over our houses! Car crime is a problem. The new complex they have built contains some excellent restaurants and a good cinema and bowling.

Word on the Street: Feltham

A much less expensive location than all of its' surrounding neighbours, it is only a matter of time before prices escalate as they have already done in neighbouring boroughs. buy now whilst low prices last
