I have been living in Bromley for the past 2 years…

…I lived in Bermondsey SE1 for 28 years so moving to Bromley was a huge change in my life. I love living in Bromley and find it is very green.

If you are looking for a pleasant, leafy and affordable suburb with plenty of attractive Victorian and 1930s houses, excellent transport links, good state schools and decent shops, then, this is it...

...Ideally, I would like to live in Richmond and Kingston, where I grew up, but I can't afford the sort of nice 4 bed house with drive, garage and big garden that I have here in Bromley. I have two kids and don't work for a merchant bank or a firm of consultants. If you can find a nicer area, at these prices, anywhere else in Greater London then please let me know.

A great place to live ...

... Good for families, decent state schools, good shopping centre, lovely countryside, 15 mins to London by train.

Word On The Street: Bromley and Bickley
Bromley is one of these places that is difficult to love ...

... There isn't a grand park, beautiful architecture or even a 'village' feel (it's too big for that). But it is so convenient for everything it is difficult to find a reason why you'd want to leave.

I live in Bickley, which is a smart area about a mile to the east of the town centre. To buy houses In Bickley Park you won't get much change for 1.5m but you can find better value nearby. It is commuter heaven, with Chislehurst and Bickley stations giving you direct links to every major station across the south of the City and West End. (Chislehurst station is closer to Bickley than to Chislehurst itself). The fastest trains are Bromley South to VictoriaWe're looking at primary schools for our son, and we are well served (although the best state schools seem to be to the west of Bromley centre, there is an excellent prep school at Bickley Park).

Shopping is easy with the Glades and a Waitrose nearby, and under half an hour to Bluewater (by car) or London (by train). Bickley is well served for hairdressers but that's about it.

For green spaces, it takes about half an hour to get to properly rural Kent, although London starts to peter out quite quickly after Bromley. Greenwich Park and Blackheath are only 15 minutes away by car.

Unless you are a fan of the vertical drinking emporium, Bromley centre does not offer much for the discerning drinker and can be a bit daunting at night. But you can find good pubs in the Bromley North area (i.e. north east of the station towards Sundrige Park) or in Chislehurst. And real ale fans will love the Bitter End off licence.

Eating is a bit more limited - mainly chains in Bromley centre. But there is Abbaye, a moules-frites place in the Glades, and Tamasha, an upmarket colonial feel curry house just out of town. Chislehurst offers a bit more variety, but for the big night out you need to get the train to London (or to Brixton, I'm told by friends who have teenagers).

So it has pretty much everything - if it's not on your doorstep then it's very easy to get to!

I have just bought a lovely 1 bed period property with garden. The area has everything you could want, especially for someone in their 20's ...

... Plenty of bars/restaurants and not to mention the Glades which has everything you could ask for! With this only 20mins to London what more could you ask for? Just make sure you keep it to yourself as prices are currently very reasonable.

We have recently purchased an Edwardian property near Sundridge Park and Bromley North ...

... There is a wealth of period properties in this area which gives it a lovely feel, plus there seems to be an influx of young professionals who are tempted by the easy access to London and shops only 5 mins away. Definitely an area on the up!

I was born in Bromley and have lived in and around the area all my life ...

... Like any place it has many sides both good and bad. The amenities are good for young families or middle-aged buyers. There's everything you want in terms of shops, schools, entertainment, sports and restaurants. For younger people the lack of nightclubs is a problem, but shouldn't worry property hunters.

Night time does bring out the hoodies, but they tend to concentrate around the High Street. However, this does mean buses home of an evening can be eventful.

Quieter surrounding areas are particularly good places to look: Hayes, Shortlands, Bickley and Bromley Common all have their merits. Council Tax can be a bit steep in areas though. The country is just behind you with nice common land to the south.

Transport links are excellent for south of the river. Bromley South is 20 minutes to Victoria, Hayes takes you into Lewisham (for DLR) Charing Cross and Cannon Street, and there's a shuttle from Bromley North to Grove Park that is a fast link to London Bridge and Charing Cross. Through the heart of Bromley runs the A21 that sweeps you swiftly to the M25.

We live in Bromley old town (by Bromley North) and think it's a fantastic place to live ...

... Heaps of local pubs, quiet tree lined streets, Sundridge Park nearby and the Glades shopping centre 5 mins away. Easy commute to work (Bromley South to Victoria 15-20 mins).

Word On The Street: Bromley
Its great to live in Bromley as we enjoy been close to city and not too far from the countryside towns of Kent.

Word On The Street: Bromley
Bromley offers excellent transport links into central London, 30 Mins to Charing Cross, London Bridge, via Bromley North and 16 Min to Victoria, Blackfairs via Bromley South...

The glades has all your high street stores, Debenhams, Starbucks, Hennes, Boots, Nine West, Dune, Hobbs etc. Great restaurants and bars, perfect for young professionals and families. I moved from central London to Bromley two years ago and love the community feel of the area, great value for money and excellent lots of trains available after a night out.

Word On The Street: Bromley
Bromley is a great place to live....

Good shops, with Glades shopping centre near by and there are a lot of good cafes around. Schools and transport are good, too.

Overall, it's a lively fun town with things for young children to do.

Word On The Street: Bromley
I love Bromley - the area has a great feeling...

Moved from Belgravia in London for better quality of air and my son's health has improved dramatically.

Word On The Street: Shortlands Village
Shortlands Village is a lovely area of Bromley.

It has pretty victorian terraced cottages and specialist shops. The main road through the village gets busy during rush hour but it is generally a very quiet and friendly place to live. Also ideal for commuters, so very popular with young professionals

Word On The Street: Bromley
For a few years I have lived and worked in Bromley...

I am a Scandinavian, and like quiet and calm atmosphere when I go for my evening walk, and a nice, decent restaurant to have my dinner; it's all in Bromley.
The A 21 takes you out of town in a few minutes and from Bromley south station it takes you 15 to 20 minutes to go to Victoria station. Now I am looking for a house to buy in Bromley

Lived in many places, but none quite like Bromley...

With fantastic commuting (Victoria 17mins, Blackfriars, Cannon St, London Bridge all within 30mins) and a bustling town centre. Whilst maintaining the London feel, Bromley has so much green that it is more like Kent. Lots of new restaurants and bars have recently made the nightlife even better. Can't see why anyone would want to live any closer to the big smoke!

Word on the Street: Bromley
Bromley has a pleasant suburban atmosphere which is only marred by the attraction of great number of shoppers and visitors during the weekend period...

The feeling is that Bromley is a little too far south to be considered trendy (it's 20 minutes away from Croydon by car) and also perhaps too conservative for the more fashion conscious who, preferring South London, might head for Blackheath, Clapham, Wimbledon areas first.

However the town is itself fairly lively and the area benefits from its proximity to the Kent countryside. House prices are generally quite high but then Bromley is perhaps nearer to London than is commonly known (15 minutes in to Victoria station).

Word on the Street: Bromley
Bromley is excellent for travel to London - Victoria/Blackfriars...

Lots of restaurants and pubs, a few night clubs and a couple of good theatres. Decent schools and of course the Glades Shopping Centre.

Word on the Street: Bromley
Bromley is an interesting mix of old and new...

Often ignored because it is not on the underground network, it has excellent rail links nonetheless: only 18 minutes by fast train to London Victoria.

The town centre is lively and offers tapas bars and clubs. The outlying areas skirt the greenbelt and Petts Wood East is an area where property is particularly sought after due to its excellent schools.

In fact, the whole Borough has a good reputation for its schools.

Word on the Street: Bromley
A self contained town with convenient transport links...

Good connections to Victoria, Charing Cross, Cannon Street and Blackfriars makes this town one of the best positioned that I have seen. Generally a very decent area with good local amenities.
