Location
No one would doubt Southampton's claim to be one of Britain's most important historic ports. But there's another Southampton too: a youthful city that really comes into its own for shops, entertainment, arts and nightlife. This can be experienced at Ocean Village, where shops, cafés, restaurants and cinemas flourish alongside a 450-berth marina and the Royal Southampton Yacht Club.
But that's just one place to shop in Southampton. The city's superb mix of shopping centres, traditional shops and designer boutiques has elevated the city into one of the UK's Top 10 retail destinations.
There's WestQuay, a huge new complex with major branches of John Lewis, Waitrose and Marks and Spencer, plus fifty fashion outlets. Alternatively, you could give the credit cards an airing at The Mall Marlands, or The Bargate Centre. For more traditional shopping try East Street, Bedford Place and Above Bar, or the antiques quarter around Old Northam Road.
Southampton is known as the 'green city', due to its 50 or so parks. One of the best is Southampton Common: 326 acres of woodland, ponds, wetlands and nature trails for outdoor pursuits like walking. You can also keep fit at any number of sports and leisure clubs throughout the city including branches of David Lloyd and Fitness First. Or of course, you can always take to the water!

Travel
Although there is residents' parking available at The Quadrant, you could easily live here without a car. The excellent location means that walking, cycling or taking the bus to the City centre are both practical options. The night bus service is particularly useful if you like staying out late.
Southampton Central station is within walking distance from The Quadrant, less than a mile away. From here there are trains to London Paddington via Reading or London Waterloo direct. Journey times vary between 79 and 85 minutes. You can also get to Winchester in about 15 minutes or Portsmouth in under an hour.
The M27 links Southampton to Portsmouth and joins the M3 at junction 4. Or, in the opposite direction, hop on the ferry or sea cat for the Isle of Wight. Southampton also boasts an airport offering flights all over Europe and the UK.

Lifestyle
Perhaps it's the presence of two flourishing universities that helps to make Southampton such an exciting place for nightlife. Traditional pubs, funky bars and clubs, theatres and restaurants, rock music, opera and dance, a Jongleurs comedy club: you need never have a night in.
Some of the most popular bars and restaurants are to be found close by at Bedford Place and the elegant Oxford Street area. The historic Old Town offers a wide range of cuisine from just about everywhere: American diners, Greek tavernas, Thai restaurants, and some exceptional Italian and Indian venues. It's also the place to go for a quiet pint in a good old fashioned pub; try the Duke of Wellington, one of the city's favourites.
In addition to these, there's Leisure World, a multi-venue entertainment centre which has night clubs, a casino, a sports bar with bowling lanes, as well as bars and restaurants. A popular spot is Ikon and Diva, the largest dance venue in the south with two dance floors, six bars and spectacular video shows.
If you love the performing arts, The Nuffield and Mayflower Theatres between them produce a superb choice of drama, opera, ballet and comedy. And if you're into live music of any type you can hear it at Southampton Guildhall, Talking Heads, or the Turner Sims Concert Hall.
