... the new housing development on Burghclere Down has a real sense of community with its own Community Centre and monthly newsletter.

Local schools are superb, commuting by road or train is a cinch; linking the A303, A34 and M3 to London or Southampton. The area will also soon benefit from a new Asda Superstore plus Cinema. It already has a huge Tesco & Sainsburys. Nightlife is more sophisticated with new restaurants popping up all the time.

We moved to Andover 36 years ago without even knowing where it was on the map.

Andover has given us the opportunity to buy our own home and live in safety. Our children can go out to play in lovely fields provided by the council.

We could have had none of this in London.

It doesn't have fancy shops, or huge department stores, but we don't want it to be a Basingstoke. Andover gave us a life!

Buses take forever to get anywhere outside of the town and the railway station is not all that handy unless you hire a taxi to get there. This qualifies the use of the new pensioners bus travel card as limited.

The forthcoming cinema facility is long overdue, but again, the cinema will not be centrally located. The shopping facility is OK without being outstanding.

The council, I think, are less than generous and their rulings on garden waste disposal (and Andover has a great many gardens - hundreds of them) are unrealistic. Given the number of cars which people use to take their garden waste to the council facility and the fact that they have to often queue and wait to get in - and with their engines running - does nothing for the environment.

There are worse places than Andover, but the town could be oh so much better.

We wanted to bring our children up outside of London. It was the best decision we EVER made. The quality of life is far superior than the pollution, noise, crime and dirt that London has to offer. And you get so much more for your money when buying houses. And there is only one set of traffic-control lights in the whole of Andover. The town is decorated lovely in the summer with flowers everywhere.

After living on an army camp for such a long time and then moving somewhere new I knew no-one. I was quite surprised to discover how much I do like living here. It is also surprising the amount of other ex-army families that have also settled in the area.

I now have a daughter and there are a wide variety of activities for her to do. Finkley Down Farm Park on the outskirts of Andover is good for the little ones.

The nightlife is getting better and also the latest refurbishment of the high street (and the Danebury) is looking really great!

Andover is the ideal place to bring up your children and also for professionals to settle. The price of the houses in the area make it an ideal place for people who earn a lot of money to live. Having Basingstoke, Salisbury, Winchester and Southampton so close by is a godsend. If you really wanted to escape from Andover it is easy!

Come and have a look and see if I am telling the truth!

...with easy access to Salisbury and Winchester and of course lovely walks and views of the Test Valley and surrounding areas. Commuting was always easy into London with access to the M3 and the railway station a few minutes away. A very easy place to commute from to London with a direct line to Waterloo Station. The school in Goodworth Clatford where our daughter attended was caring and only a short way from the house. Local shopping with the market twice a week was always fun and with the local authorities putting more money into the redevelopment of the town centre and surrounding areas it is now a pleasure to shop and have coffee there.

...with beautiful and historic villages all around. Andover is expanding rapidly because of its situation between motorways and main line express to London and all directions. Very up and comming area, almost no unemployment and many large new companies moving to the region.

Word on the Street: Andover

Andover is a small market town set in the beautiful Hampshire countryside. Often overlooked by its more famous neighbours of Winchester and Salisbury, it has a number of its own historical buildings, and the beautiful river Anton runs through the town centre.

The local council put on an excellent display of flowers all year round, and have invested in excellent river walks and parks. Theres plenty of things for families - lakes, sports centres, bowling, swimming, go-karting, etc. There may not be any large department stores except M&S, but most high street stores are found in the modern shopping centre. There's a market twice a week and an excellent farmers' market on Sundays.

Schools are generally good, with choice of public schools as as well as state.
The coast is less than an hour away, as is Centre Parcs and Longleat. It's a bit far for commuting to London, 70 minutes by train, but people still do it.
We've made lots of friends and think Andover is worth a look.
