Aylesbury - Word on the street
Word On The Street: Aylesbury

I have lived in Aylesbury since 1980, and I am impressed with how well the town has changed ...
... From how the town used to be 20 years ago, it has improved ten-fold, and will hopefully continue doing so.

I have lived in Aylesbury since 1984 (14 years old) when I moved with my family from Reading, Berkshire...
The town was really different back then, old/worn out with a small unappealing town. How 20 years can change a place. Shopping is great with a good selection of shops for both men and women. Train is great, plenty of supermarkets etc etc. I would only consider moving elsewhere if I wanted a change from the growing town population. (A quieter life!)

We lived in Aylesbury for 9 years and moved away for work purposes...
We have been looking forward to moving back there because we miss the compact design of the town, the good variety of shops and other local facilities, the convenient train service into London and the ease of being in the countryside within minutes.

I have lived here since 1998...
Having originally moved out this way from South London, it was a bit of a culture shock, but in the time I've lived in Aylesbury the facilities have improved tenfold. We now have more shops, pubs, eateries and a new cinema. Plus with the proposed redevelopment of the centre of town, we will also have more of the above plus better parking, traffic calming and a nicer area in the centre of town. I'm quite looking forward to it.
The housing is reasonable although prices have gone up. It's within 30-40 minutes drive to Watford, Milton Keynes and the M40/A41. There are plenty of villages nearby if you like quaint little places to visit. On the whole, not a bad place to live.

Aylesbury is a town of contrasts...
There are quiet middle class areas such as Bedgrove, but a lot of the housing is dedicated to 'London Overspill' resulting in some undesirable council estates.
The town centre, however, is very nice, and Aylesbury is a historic town with some lovely old buildings. There are good facilities for a town of its size, and many new housing develpoments on the outskirts of town are attracting more and more wealthy people to the town. So there is good and bad...just like any town!

The area is expanding very quickly, lots of new houses...
...thousands of new houses have been built here over the past five years. A new village has been created called Fairford Leys - the developers have already won several awards for their designs.
There is a frequent train service to Marylebone (about 45 minutes)..or you can just drive up the road and join the M40...lots of open space...good country pubs and excellent restaurants in and around Aylesbury...excellent place to live...regards, Chris
