…Decent schools, traditional pubs, 15 mins from Paddington, close to M4/M40 and relatively good value for money for Ealing.

Too good to be true? The Uxbridge Road is still scruffy, but Hanwell BR is on the Crossrail route so its future looks secure.

There are a good variety of properties that make the area quite unique coupled with great canal walks/ open spaces for cycling. Above all Hanwell has a very good community spirit and good transport links.

... It has loads of parks and walks, good transport to London by road and rail, with a tube station also. The pubs are good and it is just a really nice place to live - it doesn't feel like London really.

... We have a wonderful Irish Centre with a great performing arts department and great Irish Bands, both modern and trad. It is also an information centre and is welcoming. Long may it continue.

Hammersmith is a lively area with so much to give a visitor or resident. I love it - it's HOME. My family have lived on Hammersmith Grove for over 60 years.

I know it's a bit of an estate agents cliché but it is extremely pleasant. Shame about the Broadway, it would be great if Pizza Express opened up!

Transport links are great and there is a real community feel about the place, unlike other parts of London. I've lived here over the past 34 years and overall, yes, I love it here.

The people are incredibly friendly. Our neighbourhood has proved warm and welcoming and the transport links are great. For the price of a flat elsewher in London Ealing we got a 3 bedroom house with a great garden, more parks than you can shake a stick at and all the essential shops in walking distance.

There is a pool and a couple of gyms, schools, nurseries, a community centre or 3 and at least 4 churches within 10 mins of our home. We can't think of anywhere better in London for value and choice. We are delighted we found Hanwell as it has quickly become a true home for us.

A bunny park...a brent river zoo...a BR station ...a school...a church...what else! it's all in Hanwell.

We have lived here a year and are so pleased we didn't buy in overpriced Northfields or West Ealing - you get so much more for your money in Hanwell - a house instead of a flat! And the news that we are getting a tube station means it is an area that is really on the up.

Stand under the railway bridge in Station Road by Conolly Dell and tell yourself this is London! What more could you ask for: elegant period housing, canal walks, endless open spaces including the wonderful 'Bunny' Park, friendly atmosphere, two of the best guitar shops in the country (okay, not high on everyone's list), Fullers ales, good transport links in and around London...we love it and have no plans to move unless/until we can afford a house in Golden Manor...I wish!

... Charlie Chaplin went to school here, Jim Marshall had his first shop here in the 1960's visited by plenty of rock stars from the time including Pete Townsend of The Who (who came from Ealing). A great little community full of interesting people and a couple of good pubs as well.

...the most of that time has been spent in West London, particularly in Chiswick and Shepherds Bush. I now live in Hanwell and love it. People are friendly, the roads are quiet and it just takes a moment to be able to get to some of the most scenic walks in London. It also takes just a couple of moments to get to either Heathrow or Central London.

This is a great area with lots of open spaces. Hanwell is no longer the poorer Ealing!

...links into the West End and City and out to Heathrow. A cosmopolitan community with all of the benefits and few of the hassles that occur in other places. Low crime rates (for London), great open spaces and a good place to raise kids.

...and moved to olde Hanwell eight months ago and have had no regrets. The walks by the canal make me feel like I am in the countryside. The excellent local school, St. Marks Primary, is attracting new parents to the area and there is a genuine community feel.

...which is situated south of Hanwell Village and west of Northfields. It is one of the many green spaces to be found in the West Ealing area. Parks and open spaces are only one of the reasons this part of London is so family-friendly.

It has good schools, several bustling shopping areas (Northfields, Uxbridge Road, central Ealing), reasonably low crime rates (for London), decent public transportation (Piccadilly Line, trains, buses, easy access to Heathrow), and still-affordable housing. If you have a young family and have to live in the city, this is as good a place to be as any.

...into Paddington from either Drayton Green or Hanwell stations is bliss compared to the District Line.

Word on the Street: Hanwell

There are good facilities, shops nearby and wonderful open spaces within walking distance. I have lived here for 20 years and my children have grown up here. I would be loathe to move anywhere else.

Word on the Street: Hanwell

There are some attractive buildings (legacy from the Victorians) and a variety of attractive open spaces (Brent Lodge Park - known locally as the bunny park because of its small animal collection; the canal and Brent River Park; and two interesting cemeteries).

And over the past couple of years the run down town centre has picked up a bit. There is a good variety of housing.

Public transport links leave something to be desired. The railway station is served by Thames Trains who run two stopping trains an hour into/from Paddington on Monday through Saturday, and no trains on Sunday.
