Word On The Street: Chiswick

Chiswick is a very sought after area of West London. Renowned for its family focus, it now has a buoyant evening life with its many restaurants and bars sometimes owned by celebrities ...
... Chiswick is also relatively safe. To the property investor, Chiswick has been a very good bet along the years with yields approaching 17%. Chiswick is also good for public transport with its many Tube and Train links. Turnham Green to Central London should not take more than 20 mins.

This is one of the up and coming areas ...
... Several parks and green spaces, from Kew Gardens and Chiswick House to Ravenscourt Park and Gunnersbury Park (great for kids and dogs. New bars, restaurants and low cost eateries opening all the time.
Best of all, Turnham Green Terrace boasts 2 fishmongers, butcher, greengrocer, 2 cobblers and lots of clothes shops. Chiswick High Road, with its wide pavements has a Paris style boulevard society as restaurants and bars spread on to them. Property prices going up though - 2 bed flat now about 300K.

I have been here for the last 5 months, close to the Gunnersbury end of Chiswick with my wife ...
... Overall, I like the place, it's quiet and peaceful, but a few seconds walk away, you can feel the buzz of traffic on High street, or even the overhead M4. The Chiswick roundabout is clogged up at rush hours and on Fridays, but it's otherwise smooth.
All amenities are available, including a big Sainsbury and smaller Tescos and Sainsbury's. Numerous restuarants/cafes/bars are also distributed along the whole of Chiswick High Street.
Transport links are excellent with buses and district line going towards both centre and further out in west. Best location if you want both Heathrow and Central London within easy reach.

We moved to Chiswick four months ago from Balham. I can't recommend any other area more for families ...
... There is always something to keep our little one entertained even in bad weather. Loads of child-friendly cafes, playing grounds, parks, etc.
Very strong community feeling which is rare to find in London these days. Loads of local shops and fruit and veg stalls, so that we are going much less to Sainsbury since we moved here.
Yes it is pricy, but it is worth it! Contrary to other London areas that risen up in price just because they happen to be on a particular tube line while not having much to offer. Also, the state local schools are excellent (we are in Belmont school catchment area) and it has a nursery too. It means lots of saving on school and nursery fees.
We found it difficult to find the house that we can afford and we like because of the tough competition, but our experience is that if you hang around long enough you will eventually find what you want. Just stick to it and keep calling state agents.

I work here and it's lovely...
The people in the shops are very polite and friendly. It's the sort of place where people take time to stop and help you out when you need directions.

I bought a garden flat in Bedford Park and have found it to be an absolutely wonderful place to live...
As a longhaul purser (cabin crew) based at Heathrow, I find easy access to the airport via the M4 or A4 roads and use whichever is the quieter depending on time of day of my flights.
On my doorstep on Turnham Green Terrace is a wonderful Ialian delicatessan, a fish shop, fruit shop and everything Ican buy on a daily basis knowing its fresh and not been sitting on supermarket shelves and storage warehouses for weeks.
Idont mind paying a little extra for non mass buying and the personal service Ireceive in these individual shops. I reminds me of shoppping with my mother as a child when we would not go to a supermarket but instead walk to the local shops for our fresh daily produce.
M garden flat has beautiful established trees and shrubs and the birdlife is thriving with thrush, robin redbreast, blue tits, blackbirds to name but a few. and yet Ican be in central london in 2 mins courtesy of the tube station 3 mins walk from my door.
Aart from Hampstead (on the awful northern line) and Belsize Park, there can be few other small suburbs as nice to live in as Bedford Park. I could be happy here for a very long time.

Expensive to buy - but lovely to live in....
Excellent restaurants around the Chiswick High Road; green spaces around Turnham Green; an almost village-y feel, yet very convenient for both the centre of town and getting out of London.
The downside? Increasingly prosperous residents pushing up property prices to dizzying heights. Those of us who nipped into W4 in the early 90's and are now looking for more space can't afford to buy anything larger.
