Word On The Street: Mortlake

... It's close to the river and Richmond Park, and sandwiched between East Sheen and Barnes, giving it all of the benefits but with lower house prices. Safe and welcoming, with excellent primary schools and great transport links to Waterloo and Hammersmith, it's perfect for young families looking to buy somewhere bigger but stay in South West London. ... Moved to US after 31 years. I have very fond memories of the area. Went to a great school in Sheen Mount and spent many summers either playing cricket on Sheen Common or biking around Richmond Park. Also ideal for getting into Central London in about 20 minutes.

... Eighteen years, three children and two house moves later, we are still enjoying everything Sheen has to offer. Mortlake station has frequent trains to Waterloo (and Eurostar) 20 mins away. Beautiful Richmond Park and the Thames tow path are within a few minutes walk.

Excellent schools, shops, library, playgrounds, supermarket, restaurants, healthcare etc and the people are lovely. Also there is an abundance of charity shops and cafés, so it rates highly for cheap shopping and good elevenses.

Also good for arts, picture framers, gyms etc, etc. Love it.

... Only 20 minutes into central London by train, but with the river and Richmond Park on the doorstep. For ages there weren't many bars or cafés but all that's changing now, especially now that the Railway pub and Café de la Gare have been revamped, and places like Mani's and Café Nero have opened.

A good local library, easy access to the theatres in Richmond, and a great choice of local restaurants make the place a desirable London village.

We have recently bought our second house in Sheen, and cannot imagine living elsewhere.

Remember every shop on the old High Street. Graysons shoe shop, McMasters and Bob's grocery store, McAbe general store and pawn shop, three brass balls an'all. Mrs Macs sweet shop where we could get a pennyworth of lemonade powder in a paper poke and who rarely took our sweet coupons. Don't ever et them destroy the church or Queens alley or TinderBox Alley my fave.

Word on the Street: East Sheen

London's best and wildest park on your doorstep, all the shops you'll ever need for everyday purchases, ease of access into the centre of town and ease of escape when you want to get out of town. I've lived here ten years and can't see a reason to move. The only downside is that the South Circular can become a real tunnel for unimaginative drivers who can't be bothered to find another route out.

...and obvious lack of value for money. Without them we would not have found East Sheen. Surrounded by the river, the deceptively large expanses of Palewell Park and the jewel of the Royal Parks in Richmond Park, East Sheen is one of the best value buys in the stratospheric S-W London market. A strong sense of community also exists, we have been in our house for 7 months and already know half the people in our street. The area is also blessed with an eclectic collection of shops along with all the usuals, all within easy walking distance.

The high street is full of individual shops and caters for every consumer need. There are at least 30 restaurants within walking distance.
We have lived here for 7 years and wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Two drawbacks that have to be mentioned are that gardens are almost universally tiny, and the traffic is nearly always nose to tail.

My parents still live there and although it is ten years since I did, nowhere else feels so much like home. In the last ten years, I have lived in some really nice parts of London, but none of them quite live up the unique feeling of East Sheen. The people, parks, sense of community and atmosphere are really hard to beat.

Especially close to the river as we are in Sheen. Good facilities for all activities. If only the trains ran on time!
