Local History
Founded in around 600 AD, Ipswich was England's first Anglo-Saxon town. Developed as a port on the River Orwell, it is England's oldest continuously settled Anglo-Saxon town.
In Saxon times Ipswich became the most important town in East Anglia, a centre for pottery, leather, metal and horn, with its own mint responsible for striking silver coinage. In the 18th century, shipbuilding, malting and milling industries developed and, during the Napoleonic Wars, the local economy was boosted by food distribution to the Continent.
In the 19th century, engineering and agricultural manufacturing developed with Ipswich becoming an early centre for fertiliser production, with clothing and tobacco as secondary industries. Construction of a wet dock and the building of new rail links with the rest of Britain guaranteed the town's continued expansion.
